Kirsten Underwood

Dr. Kirsten Underwood began cello studies in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with Pablo Casals’ protégé Adolpho Odnoposoff, and holds the B.M. from Willamette University, the Mus. M. from Boston University, and the Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Underwood is currently Chair of the Department of Art, Music and Theatre Arts at Cameron University, where she has taught Studio Cello, Double Bass and Guitar, Music History, World Music in Culture, Music Appreciation, Community Orchestra and Guitar Ensemble. Dr. Underwood performs as Principal Cello of the Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra and also performs regularly with the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra.

In the Spring of 2019 Dr. Underwood performed a solo cello recital at the Museum of the Western Prairie. She has been recorded on the CD “Cello Music of Samuel Magrill, Volume II” with Dr. Tess Remy-Schumacher performing the Magrill Double Cello Concerto, and in the fall of 2015 Dr. Underwood performed the World Premiere of a new solo cello piece commissioned from Dr. Magrill entitled “Fiddle Tune.” She was previously a member of the Nashua and Asheville Symphonies, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and the Cullowhee and Quartz Mountain Music Festivals. A founding member of the St. Andrew’s Trio, her chamber music experiences have included the Melisande Piano Trio, the Demetrious Chamber Players and the Cullowhee Chamber Players.
