Many people are surprised to learn that the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra (WFSO) and the Wichita Falls Youth Symphony Orchestra (YSO) are separate nonprofit organizations. While each has its own leadership and mission, both share a commitment to fostering a lifelong appreciation for music and creating opportunities for young musicians throughout Texoma.
Founded in 1992 by educator and musician Gail Key, the Wichita Falls Youth Symphony Orchestra serves students from elementary school through high school. Programs include the Philharmonic Orchestra for string students in 3rd grade and older, the Symphonic Orchestra for advanced musicians in grades 6 through 12, Stringsemble, the Gail Key Academy of Music (GKAM), and strings music camps during the summer.
The YSO is led by Executive Director Shannon V and supported by a dedicated board of directors and music educators who provide exceptional performance and learning opportunities for young musicians across the region.
WFSO proudly collaborates with the Youth Symphony through programs such as the Apprentice Program, which allows select students to perform alongside professional musicians during a Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra concert each season.
